What a pompadour actually is

It's a cut with long hair on top — eight to ten centimetres — swept back with volume from the forehead, and sides worked into a fade. The difference between a pompadour that impresses and one that looks like a costume almost always comes down to how that transition is resolved.

Who it suits

It works especially well on round and square faces, because the volume on top visually lengthens the face and balances the jaw. It needs density: if your hair is very fine, you can compensate with a shorter top section and texturising product. And it asks for commitment — a neglected pompadour loses its shape within three weeks. Ideally, come back for a trim every three or four.

How to style it in five minutes

The most common mistake is applying product to wet hair without shaping it first. A pompadour is built with the hairdryer: head down, medium heat, round brush carrying the hair backwards. Only once it's dry does the matte pomade or medium-hold wax come in — a small amount, warmed between the palms, worked from root to tip. If it shines too much, you've used too much.
