New tattoo and the gym: when can you train again?

14 August 2026

It's the first question from almost everyone who trains and walks out of a session at our tattoo studio in Andorra: when can I go back to the gym? The honest answer isn't a magic number, but there is a timeline that works.

The first few days: a real pause

A fresh tattoo is an open wound. For the first three to five days, heavy sweat, the rub of technical fabrics and the bacteria on a shared machine are exactly what you don't want near that skin. Sweat macerates the area and invites infection; friction pulls the scab off early and takes pigment with it. That's where most patchy tattoos — the ones that end up needing a touch-up — come from.

Week one to two: an easy return

After those days you can pick up light activity: walking, easy cycling, mobility work. The rule is simple: if the movement stretches the tattooed skin or makes you sweat buckets, it's still too soon. Loose, breathable clothing, a shower straight after and clean hands before touching the area.

From week three onwards

Most small and medium tattoos can handle normal training by then, as long as the skin has no open scabs or redness. Large pieces and high-movement areas — shoulder, ribs, inner forearm, calf — need more room. Pools and saunas come last: still water, never before three or four weeks.

Good tattoo aftercare isn't just cream. It's knowing how to wait. A well-healed tattoo lasts decades; a missed week of training lasts a week.
