Ingrown hairs: how to prevent and treat them after shaving
5 July 2026
Ingrown hairs are those small red bumps that show up after shaving, especially on the neck. They're uncomfortable, visible and sometimes get infected. The good news: they're preventable with simple habits.
Why they appear
An ingrown hair happens when the hair, instead of growing out, grows back into the skin. It's triggered by shaving against the grain, dry skin, and a build-up of dead cells blocking the pore.
How to prevent them
Exfoliate twice a week to keep pores clear. Always shave on clean, moisturised skin and, if you're prone to them, with the grain, not against it. Use clean, sharp blades: a worn blade tugs at the hair.
What to do if you already have one
Don't squeeze it. Apply a warm compress, keep the area clean and moisturised, and let the hair work its way out. If it becomes badly inflamed, get it checked.
A professional shave helps
A classic hot towel shave opens the pore, prepares the skin and dramatically reduces the risk of irritation and ingrown hairs.
