Dandruff in Men: How to Get Rid of It and Prevent It
10 July 2026
Dandruff in men is one of the most common scalp problems and, at the same time, one of the most misunderstood. It isn't a question of poor hygiene, nor is it something you're condemned to live with forever: with the right approach it can be controlled and the skin on your head regains its balance. Understanding why it appears is the first step to saying goodbye to those white flakes on your shirt shoulder.
Why it appears
Behind most cases is a microorganism that lives naturally on the scalp, Malassezia, which feeds on the skin's oil. When it gets out of hand, it speeds up cell turnover and causes flaking. Add to that stress, hormonal changes, mountain cold, washing your hair with very hot water, or using overly aggressive products that dry out and irritate.
How to get rid of it
The key is an anti-dandruff shampoo with actives like piroctone olamine, zinc or salicylic acid. Apply it with a gentle massage and leave it on for a couple of minutes before rinsing with lukewarm water — never hot. Don't scrub with your nails: all you achieve is more irritation. And be patient, because dandruff is controlled rather than cured overnight; if you abandon the shampoo, it tends to come back.
Habits that make the difference
Wash your hair as often as your scalp type requires, moisturise the skin if you feel tightness, and avoid excess wax or gel near the roots. If the flaking comes with intense itching, redness or persistently irritated patches, it's worth seeing a dermatologist. At the barbershop we can assess your scalp and recommend a routine built around it.
