Beard and ski helmet: keeping it sharp all season

A helmet doesn't ruin your beard. What ruins it is the sweat trapped under the chin strap and six hours of a neck gaiter rubbing against it. Two habits before you go up and one on the way down, and your beard makes it through the season without frizz or a crease across it.

What happens under the chin strap

A day at Grandvalira means hours of heat and damp under your jaw, followed by dry air on every run down. That sweat-and-cold cycle lifts the cuticle of the facial hair, frizzes the chin area and leaves a groove exactly where the strap presses.

The gaiter does the rest: constant friction on the cheeks and the moustache. If the beard is dry, that friction pulls hair out. If it's conditioned, it slides.

Before you head up

Oil in the morning, no exceptions. Three drops from the root, on a dry beard, combed downwards before the helmet goes on so the hair sits flat underneath. A light balm on top stops the strap from carving a line.

The moustache deserves its own minute. It's the first thing the gaiter touches and the first thing to go sideways: comb it outwards and hold it with a touch of wax, not oil alone.

And never a wet beard under a helmet. Damp hair chills, turns brittle and snaps. If you shower before driving up to Soldeu or Pas de la Casa, dry it properly first.

Coming off the mountain

Rinse with lukewarm water, never hot, to clear the sweat and the leftover sunscreen, then pat dry. That two-minute rinse prevents half the small breakouts that show up along the jawline in season.

If the skin underneath feels tight or itchy at the end of the day, that's the skin, not the beard. An alcohol-free moisturiser at night, worked into the skin rather than the hair, settles it in two or three nights.

Sunscreen on your face too, even under cloud. At altitude the radiation is stronger and a beard covers less skin than you think.

The length that survives five months of helmet

A very long beard tangles in the strap and escapes at the sides. A very short one leaves the skin with no defence against the wind. The middle ground, hair kept in check and cheek lines clean, is what works best under a helmet.
